Beautiful Underland Notebooks

I’m a big pocket notebook fan, as you (probably) know. Field Notes recently released an absolutely beautiful set of limited edition notebooks to celebrate the publication of Underland: A Deep Time Journey by Robert Macfarlane.

The notebooks aren’t available in the UK, but another notebook aficionado offered to sell me his spare pack. (Thank you, Alan Williams!)

These are absolutely beautiful notebooks. The wildly vivid artwork by Stanley Donwood is stunning. They are the kind of notebook I have real trouble actually using. Before I dare crack the covers I need to come up with something worthwhile to actually use them for.

I am Insanely Jealous

As an aside, I’m insane jealous of the name “Underland”. What a perfect name for the dark realms lying below most fantasy worlds. I wish I’d thought of it.

Underland: A Brief Review

For the most part, this is a fascinating book. (A few of the later chapters didn’t really work for me given their focus on the frigid north). For GMs this book is well worth a read—inspiration for any number of caves, caverns, subterranean dungeons and the like lurks within.

I’m planning to read Underland again, but this time I’ll be making notes and marking up the text. What better way to add versimilitude to my caves, caverns and dungeons feel real than taking inspiration from the real thing?

I’ll certainly check out more of Robert Macfarlane’s books.
