Citadel on the Wilderlands: The FAQ
Since I started working on the Citadel on the Wilderlands I’ve received a constant dribble of questions about the project. I thought it wise, therefore, to create an FAQ.
This is a “living” post in that I’ll be updating it as the project progresses. If you have a question, please leave it in the comments below.
What is Citadel on the Wilderlands?
Citadel on the Wilderlands is my love letter to B2 Keep on the Borderlands and B5 Horror on the Hill. I’m writing 500 words every weekday for a year. It’s a sandbox-style megadungeon written for 1st-level characters which contains urban, wilderness and dungeon challenges.

What Systems will Citadel on the Wilderlands support?
Citadel on the Wilderlands will initially be available in 5e and OSR editions.
When will Citadel on the Wilderlands be available?
Principle design concludes on 31 October 2023. Thus, the entire adventure will be available sometime in early 2024. (I’m shooting for March in honour of Gary Gygax).
However, if practical to do so, I’ll release smaller portions of the adventure before then. I think this is a good idea; some GMs might only want the village and town, while others might only want the dungeon (and so on).
How are you designing Citadel on the Wilderlands?
Citadel on the Wilderlands is going to be a big book. As a fan of slow, sustainable design, I’m writing 500 words every weekday for a year. My projected final word count is about 126,000 words. This equates to (roughly) a 200-page book.
Who is involved?
I’m doing the setting writing and design. Andy Lewis is crafting the 5e stat blocks, Tommi Salama is doing the maps, and Matt Morrow will be slaving away over the adventure’s principal illustrations. Steve Hood is my accountability supremo.
What is an “Accountability Supremo”?
Every weekday for a year, I aim to write 500 (good) words. At the end of every weekday, I have to tell Steve Hood how many words I wrote. Steve is working on his own 500-word-a-day project, and he has to tell me how many words he writes every day. Thus, we are keeping each other company on our noble quests.
Where is Citadel on the Wilderlands set?
Nominally, Citadel on the Wilderlands is set to the west of Ashlar on the Skeleton Coast. However, it is supremely portable and will fit into virtually any campaign setting. All you need is a stretch of isolated, hill-fringed coastline.
Will you release a Pathfinder 1 edition version?
If there is enough interest, I would be delighted to do so.
Will you release a Pathfinder 2 edition version?
If there is enough interest, I would be delighted to do so.
