MoN 043: Back to Lesser Edale

On Sunday, the 4th of April, the group—newly reunited—plotted and schemed. The full moon was but a few days away, and the investigators were keen to get back to Lesser Edale. After updating George and Jacob on the “interesting”—or perhaps disastrous— events at the Blue Pyramid Club, the group decided to buy a car, split up (again) and head to Lesser Edale.

Lesser Edale, at Last

By Monday night, the group was reunited in Lesser Edale. Ikil and Dudley had travelled by car while Jacob, Charles (accompanied by his trusty Jeffrey), and George arrived by train. While sitting in the Laughing Horse enjoying a few well-deserved drinks, the group then remembered they needed silver weapons to hurt werewolves. The next day, Dudley and Ikil dashed back to London, Charles went on a day trip to Derby, and Jacob simply borrowed a silver carving knife from the pub’s landlord.

The balance of the day before the full moon was spent re-exploring the village and chatting with a couple of the locals. During this time, the weather was uniformly terrible, and as the night of the full moon approached, the group noticed the village get quieter and quieter. Villagers stopped visiting the pub after dark, and all seemed to get home well before nightfall.

The Full Moon

Finally, on April 9th, the full moon rose over a rainy, fog-shrouded village. As the characters sat up in the pub’s taproom, Jacob heard a faint howling sound. The werewolf was abroad! Without hesitation, the heavily armed group stormed out of the Laughing Horse and began their search. The howling seemed to be coming from the general direction of Castle Plum, and so the group headed in that direction. The village seemed abandoned. Only a few lights burned here and there, and no one else was about.

As the howling continued, the party drew closer to the castle. All was in darkness except for lights burning in the library. Ikil crept up the window to look inside and saw Lord Arthur and Lawrence sitting together at a table drinking brandy. Of Eloise, there was no sign. Creeping back to the group, Ikil led the way to the Vane family mausoleum. It squatted in the darkness, wreathed in vines and creepers. The door was not locked, but the party did not enter—more howls filled the air, and they did not come from within.

A fruitless few hours were spent watching the castle and attempting to find the source of the howling. As the night grew darker and the fog grew thicker, the group seemed no closer to finding the source of that damnable howling. Finally, as dawn began to glow in the east, the group admitted defeated—for the night. The moon would be full for the next two nights, and that was plenty of time to get to the bottom of the matter…
