What Games Raging Swan Press's Patrons Play

About a week ago, I asked the heroic members of Raging Swan Press’s Patreon campaign an important question. I’m starting to plot and plan the release schedule for 2024, and it seemed prudent to ask them which editions of our books they use in their games.

The question I asked was this:

Which edition of our books (5e, OSR, Pathfinder 1, Pathfinder 2, System Neutral) do you use in your campaigns?

The results were illuminating and surprising. (Behold, a pretty donut of information)

2023 Edition Poll Results

Unsurprising Findings

  • 5e and System Neutral books are our most popular editions. (That said, the last time I ran this poll back in 2021 5e took 36% of the vote and System Neutral took 31%.)

Surprising Findings

  • Pathfinder 2 remains unpopular.
  • Almost twice as many patrons play Pathfinder 1 as play Pathfinder 2.
  • OSR is almost as popular as both editions of Pathfinder combined.

Closing Thoughts

Clearly, 5e and System Neutral books will remain a focus of our release schedule. In particular, I love writing System Neutral books. Sometimes, I think we get so hung up on mechanics that flavour and detail suffer. I love adding verisimilitude to my games; I think it makes them much more immersive.

Less clear is the relationship we’ll maintain with Pathfinder 2 moving forward. I think it safe to say we won’t be releasing any major Pathfinder 2 books or adventures until I’ve had a chance to assess the response to their new rulebooks (which will probably be available by the time you read this) released under the ORC license. Pathfinder 1 is still going strong—which I find amazing as Paizo has stopped offering meaningful support for the system—so we’ll continue to release supporting materials.

What Do You Think?

Do you have a thought or suggestion about next year’s release schedule? Leave me a comment. I’d love to know your thoughts.
