What's the Sentence For?
Every sentence has a purpose*.
Every sentence has a purpose*.
Perhaps the sentence explains a rule, describes a piece of treasure or sets the scene for an exciting encounter. Whatever its purpose, if the sentence fails to fulfil its purpose it is a failure. It is nothing more than pointless filler or a distraction. If a sentence fails to fulfil its purpose, you should delete or rework it. Don't waste the reader's time.
Keeping in mind the sentence’s purpose enables tight writing and wastes fewer words. It helps you serve the reader. These are Good Things.
*As do paragraphs, chapters and whole books.
